these are the eyes of disarray
what a sweet surprise
Published on March 21, 2008 By little-whip In Writing

Yesterday to my delight and surprise I recieved a package from Kelly W, a blogger I read often but whose threads I rarely comment on, my preference for the past couple of years being on the debate that follows political articles or screeds about volatile topics.  Kelly writes more fiction and 'slice of life' sort of stuff, and while it's excellent and entertaining it doesn't lend itself well to (my sort of)  commentary.  I do want her to know I read, though.  Hers and Joe's and SanCho's and Buddah's and all the other creative souls out there putting it on the line at JU.

I just wish I had a way to seperate the gazillion 'how do i fix this skin' or 'look at my latest doodad' articles. Once that's fixed and the ignore feature is implemented, I may start blogging here again, or at least more often.

But I had to post this because I don't have Kelly's email addy and besides, this was sweet so I felt she deserved a public thank ya.

I've had a bitch of a week between dealing with DFS (trying to get some help) and multiple doctor appointments, one every single day this week (ugh) and I had actually experienced a mini breakdown the afternoon this package arrived, overreacting to the fact that the 'surgical center' where I am to have my hand operated on could't even draw blood there to do a potassium test and sent me halfway across town to a LabCorp franchise to have that done, and then they rejected me for surgery ANYWAY without medical clearance from a cardiologist...something we knew last week, yet they still insisted I come in there for an EKG and then drive across town for a blood test.

I'm tired and I'm sick and we're busted ass broke and I felt put upon, taken advantage of, and callously inconvenienced, not to mention smarting from the price of gas.  I must have really looked sad that day because I stopped at Cici's Pizza after doing all this running around, and when the cheerful manager explained that they took cash only for their $4.99 buffet,  but that there was an atm 'right there behind you' and I replied (miserably) "Yeah, but that will add another four dollars to my meal in fees" he took pity and laid a free lunch upon me.

I was incredulous:  "Are you serious?" I asked, and he replied 'Of course, please help youself, and if you have trouble finding anything you just let me know."

I ate two slices and a bit of salad, drank ice water (didn't want to make a pif of myself) and thanked him sincerely on my way out.  What a nice fellow. We'll return as paying customers soon, even though the food wasn't all that wonderful.  For the price that day, though, it was fan-farkin'-tastic.

So I get home dejected, not knowing now if my surgery is gonna be delayed because of this cardiac exam which is scheduled for Monday (the initial visit, at least) and looking forward to more lumbar facet injections in my back the next day (which I had done this morning) and was feeling more than just a little overwhelmed, teary-eyed as I entered the house.

And what do I see on the kitchen table but a package....for me!  From Washington State?  Hmmm, who would be sending me anything from there, I wondered...

OooH...TEA.  Fancy Tea!  Earl Grey, Chamomile, and Simon's beloved PG Tips.  And a bag of special coffee, and some 'power bars' and 'energy bars' and a really cute card.

What a nice treat! What a thoughtful gesture (the munchy bars traveled well, Kelly, arriving unbroken, moist and fresh and OMG yummy.  I feel guilty eating them, are they good for you?  Nothing good for me could taste that rich and sweet!

Simon couldn't wait to put the kettle on (we do tea properly here, no microwave allowed, lol) and the Earl Grey was sampled first, along with one of the smaller bars, which we shared.  ( which ones are energy and which ones are power?)

Delicious.

I had some of the Chamomile after I returned home this morning from my lumbar facet injections, and found it as soothing as legend claims, especially with just a drop of honey in it.

Thank you so much, Kelly! That was so sweet of you to think of us that way.

(And no, Tova, I'm not mad at you for giving her my address--feel free to do the same with any other 'care package' fairy, there's nothing like a sweet little surprise to provide a soft landing at the end of a harsh day.)

((((Kelly))))

PS- Simon has an interview the first week of April with the City of XXXXXX.  It will require a move south, down on the N.Carolina Border, but it would be a permanent job, and a GUBMENT job.  (hooyaah for benefits.)

Keep fingers and toes crossed all, prayers if ya believe in 'em, and cookies if'n ya wanna send 'em, lol.

I'm so glad to see you posting. I have been wondering about you but haven't gotten an email fired off yet. That was super sweet of Kelly. Sometimes a little kindness is just what you need when you've had a crap day. Sorry about all the medical b.s. and I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a job for your hubby. Oh and yay for the manager of cici's too.

Kelly has a way of bringing sunshine into an otherwise dreary day. She is, I believe, certainly one of the Beautiful People. And thanks for posting a public thank you to her! It's nice to hear a good word.

Yay! I am so happy you got it and like it. You have been on my mind lately and I can't say why. The one thing I have learned during my 45 years in this world is when that happens act on it.  I am not saying that so you will start reading or commenting or flaming..hehe  I swear!

O.K. for the rectangles were power bars and they might give you an energy boost but they have some calories. Now the other things are called magic cookie bars and they are pretty much a sugar cookie bottom with white and dark chocolate chips, nuts and evaporated milk. So magical. I didn't know how they would fare as far as freshness or breaking. Now I know.

For me it is fun to send surprises. I am happy it arrived at the time it did.  I mailed it so quick I forgot to enclose e-mail address. I'm sorry about that.

P.S. good luck on the job interview!

Back at ya, Dev.

It really surprised me, he didn't have to do that, but those little random acts of kindness can really touch another person.  I need to do a few more of my own.

As far as posting here...I feel out of place anymore, the geeks and skinners and gamers have taken over, it's almost impossible to find anything else to read, and while Brad said he was going to prevent WC forum posts from showing up on the actual articles list, it's yet to happen.  The ignore feature has yet to happen as well.  I'm not holding my breath, but I'm also not digging through thousands of articles about techy stuff that I have no interest in order to find something I want to read.  The front page now is like a never-ending table of contents.

Kelly has a way of bringing sunshine into an otherwise dreary day. She is, I believe, certainly one of the Beautiful People.

I concur.

LoL, Kelly, I read almost ALL your stuff, I'll have to start leaving little smilies so you know I was there, ok?

They're both Yummy (with a capital Y) and I've got dibs on the last cookie-bar, the one with the chocolate chips in it.  We haven't tried the coffee yet, but will make a pot with breakfast later this morning.

P.S. good luck on the job interview!

Thanks, Kelly...something HAS to shake out of all these resumes sooner or later, it's getting ridiculous already.  It's another small town (not as small as Big Stone Gap, which we still haven't gotten an answer on) with a population of around 60,000...but it looks like a really cheap area to live in, the median rent is only $400 in town, $620 in the county.

Maybe it's a gigantic trailer park settlement!  I'd go for that, you'll always have 'interesting' neighbors, heheh.

Thanks again, Kelly, that was so sweet and thoughtful of you, and you really made my day.

Glad you aren't angry I shared your address...heh.  I didn't think you'd mind because I don't think I've ever seen anyone not like Kelly.

And since I was the recipient of a box from her Christmas before last...I was excited for you when she said she was sending you a little something.

She's awesome.  In real life and on JU.

The manager of CiCis...nice guy, really nice.  Maybe you could write a little letter to the company talking about how you ate there and he was solicitous and professional and all the things company heads love to hear about employees.

Might get him a raise or sompin.

Great idea, but I won't mention the free meal, haha. That would probably get him fired.

What an awesome gesture... Kelly is such a sweetheart. Hope you're feeling better now. And good luck to Simon with the potential new job too.

I've been jumping on and off and hadn't noticed you were MIA! I've been thinking about you though, you were kind of imspiration for one of my recent blogs!  I hope everything works out...nope....I know everything will work out for you guys!

Hey Whip! Glad to see a little bit of cheer was dropped in your lap.

Tell Simon, "Good Luck" with the job interview. Carolina border ... city ... cheap as all get out to live there ... Sounds like a place that starts with E. Just one warning - pay REAL close attention to the speed limit. When the city cops sit on the interstate, they're looking for supplemental income and they pull speed traps all over town.

Otherwise, it's a great area. Friendly folks.

Good to see you in print again...and hurray for free pizza.

Kelly is such a sweetheart.

Yup, we got into the coffee over the weekend and it's damned good, too, I've got a cup of it on my desk right now, slightly bastardized with some vanilla creamer (some people - ahem, Simon - are such purists when it comes to coffee, haha.)

I've been jumping on and off and hadn't noticed you were MIA! I've been thinking about you though, you were kind of imspiration for one of my recent blogs!

I'll check 'em out if I can find 'em, Donna. Seems Brad still hasn't gotten around to separating WC Forum posts from actual ARTICLES, and judging by the tiny number of comments on the first three pages of 'recent articles' (all I had the patience to scroll through this morning) I'm not the only one feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of techy-skinning-gaming posts one has to wade through under the new format.

I also see that Gid is still blaming others for his cold reception here, and revived KFC's thread (which had been silent for over a week) with some nasty remarks about the family that helped him. It's enough to make me wanna puke.

As you can see, I'm not really MIA, just not inclined to post new articles which will be immediately buried under scores of skinning discussions, and while my exposure to the disgusting and narcissistic displays of certain child abusers is totally voluntary at this point, I eagerly look forward to the day when promises made will be kept, and we are given the ability to remove these causes for offense from our sight altogether.

Thanks, CM. The town name doesn't start with an E, (try D instead, lol) but thanks for the warning all the same. They are supposed to email Him sometime this week with a date for a face to face interview during the first week of April. He also has a phone interview TODAY with a large utility company, this job would take us to Cincinnati, and the pay rate is good (50k to start) but it's another long-term (12 months plus) contract, not a permanent position.

The contract money is attractive but I'd rather see Him in a secure position this year, this economy is too damned squirrely to stake our entire future on contracted consulting anymore, and even though the gubment job pays a good deal less, the benefits alone should more than make up for that.

Still no word from the Big Stone Gap position...plah. But we do have these other nibbles now, hopefully one or the other will turn into a bite.

Good to see you in print again...and hurray for free pizza.

Hiya BFD! It wasn't the 'best' pizza, but then again...it WAS. Pizza is like sex, even when it's bad, it's pretty damned good.
